The report on the excavations along Walcot Street, Bath, which discovered the commercial, residential and industrial “town” of Aquae Sulis along the road out of the monumental centre, was almost complete, needing the reports on animal bones, small finds and CBM. These reports were completed in 2024 and early 2025 by external specialists. The animal bone and small finds reports strengthened the hypothesis that there was a significant military presence in the Neronian and early Flavian periods, including the presence of Late La Tene style brooches. Similar finds in the Netherlands pointed to army links with the Rhine fortresses and matched similar links inferred from the ceramic studies. The material from the later periods was typical of civilian provincial finds. The CBM report, while based on material that was almost entirely ex-situ, confirmed the status and character of the buildings whose lower walls and footings were recorded. Thus roofing styles, the existence of heated rooms, and the variation in types over time was able to be understood. In addition, recent studies have identified the sources of some of the tile fabrics (e.g. Minety) and fabric types not yet sourced, but known from elsewhere in Bath, were also identified.
