Chichester Roman Week is an ambitious community event run by The Novium Museum and which celebrates the rich heritage of a city replete with Roman archaeology including a bath house and the remains of substantial city walls. First created in 2016, the event is now an annual and much-loved fixture in the city’s calendar.
The week-long programme of events includes lectures, tours, workshops and child friendly activities, all delivered by the museum team and partners from across the district. The culmination of the week’s events is a Roman re-enactment day held in Priory Park in Chichester city centre.
With the financial support of the Roman Research Trust, The Novium Museum was able to focus on developing our re-enactment day, improving the existing offer through incorporating a professional sound system for our re-enactors as well as providing new, additional interpretation and activities to our programme including creative storytelling, children’s crafts and Roman hairdressing sessions. With these additional offers, Chichester Roman Week saw a record audience of well over 2000 visitors to the re-enactment event meaning that we engaged more people than ever with Roman heritage, archaeology and history.
