The Origins of Venta Icenorum (awarded 2024)

Continued excavations within the grounds of the Caistor Hall Hotel added to our knowledge of development and topography of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum. A trial trench excavated in 2023 was expanded to investigate what appeared to be complex stratigraphy relating to the late Iron Age and early Roman period. Although there have always been hints of Iron Age activity in the hinterland of the Roman town, the 2023 trench was the first time that in situ deposits of this date had been encountered and the 2024 season represented an important opportunity to develop these findings, revealing a complex array of pits and ditches dating to this late Iron Age/early Roman period.  The work also provided important opportunities for developing the skills of the volunteers from Caistor Roman Project and enabled a wide range of public outreach activities.
